What is Fips?
Fips is a Freeware utility for splitting you hard disk into 2, you might
think why would you want to do that? But the answers simple if you want
to install Linux you probably will need to have a Linux formatted hard
disk and the only way to have a Linux formatted hard disk and a Windows/DOS/OS2/MacOS
etc.. Is by 1) having 2 hard disk or 2) making your computer think you
have 2 hard drives. Then you can format the second hard disk as a Linux
hard drive, sounds simple? Well it isn't!
WARNING!
When reading the FIPS manual you keep coming across those words "we
accept no responsibility for any damage caused by using FIPS" and when
your using FIPS you'll probably know why. I used it and afterwards Windows
wouldn't boot so I booted DOS from a boot diskette I could still read data
from my Hard drive so I thought no problem I'll just re-install Windows,
so I re-wrote my boot disk config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to load my
CD-ROM drive and ran the Windows 95 installation. I got a message saying
I don't have enough disk space unless I was installing over Win 3.x or
Win 95 so I though Im installing over Win95 so there will be enough space,
wrong! when I got to entering my Product ID it wouldn't accept my code!
I tried about 8 times before giving up and trying to backup my Hard Drives
contence (450mb) onto 3 1.44mb Disks I then formatted my windows Drive
and the install worked first time.
Instructions although FIPS comes with pages of documentation I didn't understand a word of it so I'll try to be more to the point: 1) First you must backup any important data copy anything important to disks etc.. 2) Now move make all System files Normal files (remember which are which so you and change them back afterwards. 3) Run scan disk on your hard disk it should fix any errors. 4) Run Defrag on your hard disk it should move all the information on your hard disk to the top (if there are any System files they will stay at the bottom which is a major problem) 5) Copy FIPS onto a DOS BOOT disk 6) Boot your computer with your boot disk 7) Run FIPS if all has gone well you should be able to split your Hard drive into 2 (you can even choose the size of them!!! ) 8) Run the Linux Install program 9) When using FDisk or Disk Druid delete the second hard drive (NOT THE FIRST!!) and remake a Linux Native hard drive and a small Linux Swap Drive (20-128Mb.) 10) Finish the install if given the option to install LILO don't FIPS and LILO don't mix it can turn into a death-trap! Make a Boot Disk Instead. 11) You now have a dual booting PC!
I hope that's helped (if you have had any good or bad experiences with
FIPS E-mail me now!)
